The event organised by the Federation of Ogbomoso Students' Union, University of Ibadan chapter, will be held on Thursday, July 10, at the Students' Union Events Center at the University of Ibadan.
In an exclusive interview with IBPulse.com, Olagbende
Damilare, President of the Federation of Ogbomoso Students' Union, U.I Chapter, said Basorun Dele Momodu is the well deserving keynote speaker.
He said: "Our
Keynote Speaker is Basorun Dele Momodu, the CEO of Ovation International and
Publisher of the Ovation Magazine. He also writes many piece and articles
bearing his mind and contributions to the many issues affecting our nation
Nigeria. He is best known for his Saturday Breakfast Piece called The Pendulum - a
very insightful and educating column."
Damilare also said Prof.
Bayo Okunade of the department of political science at the University of Ibadan would be the guest lecturer.
"He
presents himself as a speaker who appeals to national and international communities and we understand he possesses the strong ability to link the town with
the gown. We strongly believe he can do justice to the theme.
"A distinguished professor of political science with various studies and research works in his
field. He has served in many capacities such External Assessor/Examiner at
various Institutions e.g University of Ghana, Legon; Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. He is also the
Director of Distant Learning Center, University of Ibadan," Damilare told IBPulse.com.
The theme of the event is "2015 Election: Is Nigeria Shaping up to be an Eerie Repeat of 1965?" Damilare said the theme was chosen to address the similarities between the parliamentary election of 1965 with the current political climate in Nigeria.
He said: "The theme seeks to relate the hustle and jostle for political survival in the parliamentary
election of 1964-1965 all aimed at political relevance and quest for power of
1965 - the NNA (NPC/NNDP) Alliance and UPGA/NCNC Alliance to the currently
political atmosphere of the nation; coupled with many national issues especially
that of security and the constantly disappearing monies in government."
Through the event, he said they seek
to educate, inspire and enlighten.
Damilare said: "We seek to educate, inspire and
enlighten the minds of Nigerians on the real history of Nigeria from the First Republic;
to know the root source of our current predicament because we strongly believe leadership
crisis, ethnicity and political instability have been the hallmark of Nigerian politics.
"Also
with this lecture, we wish to motivate and foster individual and collective
involvement in the local community. It starts from within. We want to offer
opportunity to enlighten the ever-increasing youth population to brace up to
challenges and exploit profitable entrepreneurial opportunities/ventures that
come their way."
He however said the ultimate aim is to honor Chief S. L. Akintola.
"Most
especially, [our aim is] to celebrate a worthy hero of Ogbomoso land on the significant day
of his posthumous birthday. He lives on," he told IBPulse.com
