Organizers of TEDxBodija, the first TEDx event in the ancient city of Ibadan have said the event would be held at FilmHouse Cinema Room 1, Heritage Mall, Dugbe Ibadan.

In a chat with IBPulse.com, Olufemi Babologbon, TEDxBodija's licensed organizer said the decision to hold the event at the Heritage Mall was reached following a visit of the organizing team to the cinema.

"The team went to check the cinema, saw that it is designed like most venues used for TEDx talks outside Nigeria: the podium, the screen, the aesthetics and the size, all to give us TED-like experience," Femi told IBPulse.com.

The event will hold on November 30, 2013 at Cinema Hall 1, FilmHouse, Heritage Mall Ibadan. The theme is Time and Space".

"TEDxBodija was licensed in May 2013 - Its focus is on sharing ideas between businesses, people and communities in Ibadan. The theme for TEDxBodija holding on 30th of November, 2013 is: ''TIME AND SPACE''. It holds on 30th November, 2013 by 12 noon," the organizers said in a statement.

"Created in the spirit of TED’s mission, “Ideas worth spreading,” the TEDx program is designed to give communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level. TEDx events are fully planned and coordinated independently, on a community-by-community basis.

Privately owned media houses in Ibadan have been commended for portraying a better image of the ancient city. Olufemi Babalogbon, Chairman organizing committee of TedxBodija stated this in an exclusive interview with IBPulse.com.

According to him, the media houses are contributing to the socio-economic growth of the city. He specifically mentioned Splash FM 105.5 and Beat FM 97.9.

“We should appreciate stations like Splash FM, Beat FM and other private owned media houses in Ibadan. They've been able to paint a better image of Ibadan, also project the Ibadan brand and it is helping a lot,” he told IBPulse.com.

According to him, the stations in addition to efforts of the government at making the city peaceful and attractive to investors had significantly made the Ibadan brand more attractive.

He said: “Looking at Ibadan, it has been one of Africa’s largest cities, it has been the hub of civilization in Nigeria – has Africa’s television station but there have been setbacks. What is happening in Ibadan now with new government is quite impressive. There has been a lot of development in terms of business expansion, the economy is growing.

“If you look at it, it needs to be balanced; we need to bring humanity to all what is happening so that we don’t get a fully urbanized Ibadan city where the majority of the citizens are suffering. So I said ‘okay, this is the time for you to bring a platform where both the old and young can interact, where the poor and the rich, literate and illiterate; people can share ideas about business, development, social entrepreneurship, which are the key to development of the economy of Ibadan’.

“The time is just now, everything is just defining that this is the right time to have TEDx in Ibadan, not just Ibadan, let the whole Nigeria and the whole world come to Ibadan to experience TEDx like never before in terms of quality, contents, and impacts.”

Organizers of TEDxBodija, an event that is designed to give Ibadan community, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences, said the event would be unique in terms of the structure and format of the presentations.

Olufemi Babologbon, chairman of the organizing committee disclosed this in an exclusive interview with IBPulse.com. He decried the transformation of TEDx events in Nigeria to seminars.

"Most of the TEDx in Nigeria turn out to be seminars, maybe it’s because Nigerians like so much of seminars. But the spirit of TEDx is innovation, creativity, ordinary people sharing the stories of their lives with communities and people going to replicate it," Olufemi told IBPulse.com.

He said TEDxBodija which is the first of its kind in the city of Ibadan will be different from the TEDx events being held in other Nigerian cities.
He said: "TEDxBodija is not going to be just another TEDx, it will be like we are just bringing in TEDx to Nigeria."

On the timing of the event, he said the time is right to bring TEDx to Ibadan at a time the city is witnessing business expansion and economic growth.

He said: "If you look at it, it needs to be balanced; we need to bring humanity to all what is happening so that we don’t get a fully urbanized Ibadan city where the majority of the citizens are suffering. So I said “okay, this is the time for you to bring a platform where both the old and young can interact, where the poor and the rich, literate and illiterate; people can share ideas about business, development, social entrepreneurship, which are the key to development of the economy of Ibadan”.

"The time is just now, everything is just defining that this is the right time to have TEDx in Ibadan, not just Ibadan; let the whole Nigeria and the whole world come to Ibadan to experience TEDx like never before in terms of quality, contents, and impacts."
