This year's edition of the annual Egungun Festival is currently underway in Ibadan. Last year, the festival went out of hands resulting in the arrest of several masquerades who were locked in police cell for fomenting trouble and disturbing the peace in the city of Ibadan.
To avert similar crises this year, the government has asked for those involved in the festival to ensure peaceful conduct.
The caretaker
committee of Ibadan North East Local Government Area of Oyo State, Mr
Naheem Oladipupo Oluokun, has called on the people of the area,
particularly the Egungun worshippers to maintain peace, order and avoid
any act capable of disturbing the peace of the state. This
was contained in a press statement made available to the Nigerian
Tribune and signed by Mrs Adenike Adisa, the Director of Education and
Social Services.
He urged the organisers of the festival not to allow hoodlums to hijack
the celebration to unleash mayhem and violence in the state, adding that
the present administration in the state had passion for peace and
orderliness.
He,
however, warned the organisers of the festival and their followers not
to use the period for looting and vandalisation in the state.
