Ibadan chapter of the Akure National Union, has cancelled its monthly
meeting in honour of its late monarch, the Deji of Akure and Chairman
of Ondo State Council of Obas, Oba Adebiyi Adesida, Afunbiowo II.
According to a press release issued by the president of the union, Professor Abiodun Ayodele of
the Department of Botany, University of Ibadan, Oba
Adesida's passage is a monumental loss to Akureland, Ondo State and the nation.
He described the late monarch as someone who personified humility and love; he said he was passionate about the development of the ancient city.
"All sons and daughters of Akureland are very shocked at the news of
the passage of our king. He was well respected and revered. We had very
robust relationship with him as he was one of us while sojourning in
Ibadan,” the union stated.
According to Professor Ayodele, Akureland witnessed tremendous
progress and development under the short reign of the late monarch,
stating that he would be sorely missed by all sons and daughters of the
city.
He cited the renovation of the palace and the modern development he
has brought the way of the institution of Obaship, especially the
building of a new palace and the building of a mosque and church inside
the palace.
The union specifically noted the attempt by the late monarch to
further transform the palace of the Deji into a tourist centre and his
attempt to lift the worth of the Deji monarchy.
“We commiserate with all sons and daughters of Akureland, Akure
traditional council and the governor of the state on this transition.
May God give us all the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” the union said.
