The World Bank has approved 200 million dollars, (about N32 billion) to support Nigeria’s flood management in Ibadan, Oyo State.
As early as 5am, the public refuse dumping site close to Yidi Agodi in Ibadan, southwest Nigeria is a beehive of activities - not by sanitary inspectors and hygiene officers - but by individuals who have found the place the best (or most convenient) place to defecate, even though a bold notice threatens 'open defecators' with huge fines.
A tipper driver identified as Kabiru was trapped yesterday under the debris of a 2-storey building which collapsed at Ologuneru in Ido Local Government area of Ibadan city. Divine providence, however, made dozens of others working at the uncompleted building site escape unhurt.

Several areas in Ibadan yesterday (Wednesday) recorded rain showers which lasted for about 30 minutes, the rainfall was the first in the new year.

Also, some parts of Lagos metropolis, on Thursday, witnessed the first rainfall of the year, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) has reported.

NAN also reported that the rain in Lagos, which was not destructive, began around 1.30 p.m and lasted for about an hour.

Some residents in Ikeja area of Lagos told NAN in separate interviews that the rainfall was “a welcome development,” adding that it portended good signs for the New Year.

Mrs Caroline Ojo, a grocery trader at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), said it was a sign of good things to happen this year.

NAN reported that many passengers were stranded at the exit gate of the airport, waiting for the rain to stop.

The rain, it was gathered, did not, however, affect flight operations.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) has described the downpour as normal occurrence, especially in coastal towns, including Lagos. The agency said the rain was an indication of harmattan.

In spite of a court injunction asking the Oyo state government not to demolish structures at the popular Ile Eja area, Oja'ba in Ibadan, traders were shocked on Friday when they found their structures demolished and wares displaced.
